Yay! Photos!

Found the cord, so this won't be dull and lacking photos anymore.

First up is a hash from last week (yes, I take pics sometimes even when I don't post them)

The beans and hash thing (which looks like dog food but tasted better, really)

And my most recent dinner, kinda a cross between popcorn-tofu and chicken fried tofu, with onions. yum.

Tofu is a good point to lead into my mad shopping spree. With wheels of my own now, I can actually go all the places and get all the stuff I want! (well, and can afford...)

H&L, home of affordable tofu

6lbs for $5? I'm sure I can think of something to do with it all. Heck, this is almost a better deal than dried beans, and cheaper than I could make it myself. yum.

This is TVP from earthfare. For all the non-veggies out there, TVP is soy crumbles. These are unflavored, but most people in the US have had them as Bacos. It's cheap, and a pound will feed a bunch of people, or stretch meat a loooong way, if that's your thing. Actually, the TVP was $0.50 less per pound at my last place.... hmmm

I didn't feel at all deprived until I got back to the car and realized I didn't have a vegan cupcake the size of my head. The receipt printed a bit off, this is organic corn meal @$.99/lb (for polenta) and a 1#6oz bag of vital wheat gluten, used in making weird veggie stuff.

I've got plans for all this stuff, but mainly for the tofu. It's gotta be used up by april 11 (if I hadn't opened it), and I hate changing the water every day. Lucky for me I know about a million things to make with tofu. Like tofu ricotta, which can then be stuffed in ravioli, lasagna, and calzones. Or mixed with TVP, wheat gluten, and some spices to make mock ground pork which can be made into patties, meat balls, or stuffed into gyoza and pot stickers.

Om nom nom.

  2. For a "lazy" person when it comes to cooking, you sure are inventive.

  3. Whole Foods? Are you a fellow Austinite?

  4. @One Heart- I thought about that. I think it's going to wait on zucchini and real tomato, though.

@Alyse- I think lazy people are often creative- just not in the ways we should be.

@Harris- Nope, not Austin, just a love of bulk bins and made to order sammiches the size of my head :)

  5. Whole Foods seems to be from coast to coast. There's a Whole Foods near me in Capitola, California and one near my friend's office in downtown Washington, D.C.

Too bad for "j" that their nickname of "Whole Paycheck" is deserved.

  6. gotcha - Whole Foods is started/based outta here. I didn't know how widespread they were now. They've been gouging us for years. :) Still, its a fun place to visit from time to time.

  7. @August- I find that, as with everything, it depends. some of my more oddball veggie staples are much cheaper there- 50 cents or a dollar less per pound- than at the smaller local chain. But some things are more affordable at the local chain. And some things I just don't buy (vegan whipped cream in a spray can...).

@Harris- I think they might be opening a store on the moon soon. None in Laramie, WY, though. I had a tiny, amazing co-op there instead.
