Day 38- Shopping, and Dinner for Breakfast

Hit the veggie store, dollar store, and Save-a-lot. I'll put the receipts up tomorrow, I'm running late today- overslept.

I was bad at the veggie store, and got both zucchini ($1.49/lb, I think) and roma tomatoes ($1.29/lb?) but much less than a pound of each. I have no idea what I'm going to do with either one. I did resist picking up a hass avocado, even at $0.79 each.

Got catsup at the dollar store. Was hoping they'd have seeds, but if they had anything other than herbs, I couldn't find them. Too bad. I'll keep an eye out for them, though. Probably try big lots next- they often have some 10 cent seed packets, and sometimes they're even things I want to grow- Like eggplant, tomatoes, and zucchini.

Save-a-lot was still looking ravaged from the weekend, so there wasn't as much to look at as I'd hoped. I almost got a can of tomato paste, but decided against it for now- I have too much stuff already. Did get more flour and some frozen green peas @.89/lb, which was perfect! I knew they had to be cheaper somewhere, and Lara reminded me about save-a-lot yesterday.

Didn't get another bag of onions. I want/ need them, I just want to think about it a bit before I spend $2.69 (lowest price, save-a-lot) on a 3lb bag. Am I hallucinating, or did the price of onions go up a whole heck of a lot in the last couple weeks?

Ok, on to what I ate- I started the day off with "potstickers" and more roasted asparagus. (click to make BIG)
I need to check for small sauce bowls next time I'm at the thrift store- the big plastic tumbler, while effective, really doesn't do much for the photo... but this was an outstanding breakfast. Much better than oatmeal, and easier to eat, too. Not an everyday thing, though. It takes a little too long- close to 15 minutes- and when I actually have to be somewhere, I like to waste that time in the evening instead.

For dinner I caramelized an onion (last yellow onion I had) and dumped it in a bowl of batter- flour, water, 2tsp curry, salt, baking powder- mixed it up and shallow fried it to make two huge spicy onion fritters. They were yummy, but more filling and greasy than I planned for, so after I ate them I didn't move on to making dinner like I'd intended. I loafed about making full noises and reading blogs and forums instead. A tasty high-fat end to a long day.

  1. There we coupons in Sunday's paper for Oatmeal and frozen veggies. Harris Teeter has triple coupons starting tomorrow. You can use up to 20 coupons with a face value up to 99cents original savings. Don't know if I can share with you though. Many of those items are going on my shopping list! Cruising through Epicurious.com last night looking for a sauce for ravioli and came across one with peas and not much else. Looked fantastic and the ratings were great! Thanks everyone for being so supportive of J!!

  2. the dollar stores down here (in GA) got their seed in about 2 weeks ago. they were 5 packets for a dollar, so it sounds like Big Lots might be a better deal. you can also sometimes score pretty good deals on seeds at a feed store, but i don't know if there are any near you.

as for the zucchini, i've tried it as a substitute for pasta, and really liked it. just an idea .....

  3. I love reading your blog. I found it on MSN last week and have added it to my front page on Google.

With the cabbage that you have left over, you could make an enormous amount of cabbage soup with. Use some veggie bullion cubes, garlic, tomato paste and any veggies you have (chopped up) and it's awesome. Feel free to email me if you want the recipe that I have. For those meat eaters that read this, beef bullion cube are really good too.

    Keep doing your thing!

  4. Hi! just wanted to let you know that I tried the sweet potato gnocchi recipe and it was good but it was kinda bland because I forgot to put the spices in the dough. But it wasn't to bad. My hubby even liked it.

  5. @mom- didn't expect you to. I know how you guard those things. I'll look up that sauce, maybe it'd go good over home-made ravioli... Hmmm...

@Maureen- I'm sure there's a feed store here somewhere, I just don't know where. I've got a place nearby called "Fred's" that seems to have a bunch of stuff. I'll try there.

I think zucchini for pasta is going to have to wait until I have more zucchini. I've already got plans for this one.

@Chris- I'll have to try that out- after I make some broth and buy tomato paste. It'll have to be soon, though- soup season is almost over here.

@Kaitlin- You could also try "spicing" it up a bit by using a more flavorful sauce- maybe something with lemon juice or roasted veggies?

  6. I love that your mom posts on here, way to be a supportive of your daughter :D

I've noticed that in some of your recipes (mostly those involving black beans)you mention that they would be great as a dip, have you ever considered making your own tortillas just for something to add some calories/substance? There are a ton of recipes and this one http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/how_to_make_corn_tortillas/
does not require any extra ingredients other than masa flour and water, and masa can be found pretty cheap. Just a suggestion because I eat tortillas a lot, so cheap and yummy warm!

  7. I've been planning to make tortillas- but flour rather than corn. I prefer the texture of flour tortillas, and don't have masa. Just need to get around to it- I love tortillas enough that I've paid a dollar each for them before (in countries without much Mexican food), but obviously that's out for now.

  8. You're not imagining the onion thing. The price has gone up because the crazy weather this winter has caused problems for onion growers.
