Day 171- And There Was Much Carb-ing

So, yesterday was Carb-fest at Casa j. (Hey, if a certain fishy eatery can have a -fest I don't see why I can't.)

There were pizza dough bread twist thingies dipped in left over red sauce (the rest is getting used with black beans, I think), and another huge vat of fried rice.

The twists actually finished off a bag of flour exactly, which is good, because for the first time in a couple months I am out of flour (horrors). I wasn't sure this day would ever come. Now that it's here, I'm not sure what to do. I doubt I'll see another really awesome deal on flour before "baking" season. Probably back to the gritty tasting stuff from Save-a-Lot. Pleh and double pleh.

Fried rice was a bit different this time- half an onion was the same, but I used all the remaining cabbage (about 1.5 lbs), the second zucch, and a good sized sweet potato for ultra veggie-ness.

It finished off the second onion, the head of garlic, and my soy sauce. How do I live without soy sauce? It's like magic protein juice! I'm also getting low on rice. Of course, low on rice is kinda like low on flour- I still have probably 2 or 3 lbs left- but I'm getting a bit nervous. With no flour left it's gonna have to be rice and oats for most of my "filler" type foods.

And I really don't want it to be oats. tho I'm starting to wonder a bit if you can use "oat flour" as a binder for gnocchi.... I still have a sweet potato. I could try grinding the oats with the immersion blender. Anyone know if it's even worth trying?

  1. If you can make oatmeal cookies with just oats, it should be a sufficient flour substitute.

  2. I'm just wondering how it's gonna *taste*. sweet potato is good, but I don't know about sweet potato and *oats*.

    Guess I'll find out....

  3. I've made cookies with ground oats instead of flour and I just made some gnocchi tonight. I think it would definitely work! Good luck!

  4. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. I hope you're not stuck w/ only oats.

  5. I have rice, too... and some corn meal. But the wheat flour is all gone. Oh well.
